Trex Deck Installation

Trex Deck Installation in Austin: Composite Decking Done Right

Trex deck installation in Austin is the process of designing and building a composite deck using Trex capped polymer boards. We install Transcend, Enhance, and Select lines with engineered joist spacing and hidden fasteners for low-maintenance outdoor living.

Trex has dominated the composite category for two decades because the product actually performs the way the marketing claims. Capped polymer boards don’t fade like first-generation composite, they don’t splinter, and they hold up to Texas heat better than most homeowners expect when they first see the boards on a hot August afternoon.

We’ve installed Trex on hundreds of Austin decks since launching, and we’ve learned the details that determine whether a Trex deck looks great at year ten or starts showing fastener pops and edge swelling at year three. Most of those details happen below the surface, in the framing and the install method, not in the board itself. Our team walks every client through the build sequence so you know what to expect.

Trex offers three primary residential product lines, and the right pick depends on your budget, sun exposure, and how long you plan to stay in the home. We carry samples of all three and we’ll bring them out for the design consultation.

Trex Transcend (Premium)

Transcend is the flagship line, with the deepest grain pattern, the widest color palette, and the strongest fade and stain warranty in the Trex catalog. The capped surface is the most durable across all three lines, which matters in full-sun Austin yards. We recommend Transcend for primary entertaining decks and pool surrounds where the surface takes daily abuse.

Trex Enhance (Mid-Tier)

Enhance is the volume seller because it hits a real value point. The cap is similar in chemistry to Transcend but the core is lighter, which makes the boards easier to handle on multi-level builds. Color options are narrower, but the gray and brown families cover most Austin design palettes. Good fit for second-story decks and shaded backyards.

Trex Select (Entry)

Select is the entry-level Trex line. Cap quality is still strong and the fade warranty is identical to higher tiers, but the texture is simpler and the color count is limited. We’ll be honest about whether Select is the right fit for your project. For some homeowners it’s the perfect balance of low maintenance and budget. For others, the texture difference matters and Enhance is worth the small step up.

Our Trex Installation Process

Composite installation is unforgiving in ways cedar isn’t. Joist spacing, end-gap allowance, and fastener choice all affect long-term performance. Our standard deck installation process for Trex follows manufacturer specs precisely, with our own additions for Texas conditions.

  • 12-inch joist centers for diagonal patterns, 16-inch centers for straight runs (per Trex spec)
  • Treated lumber substructure with proper ledger flashing and joist tape on every horizontal surface
  • Footings drilled to 24 to 36 inches for Austin’s expansive clay soil
  • Hidden fasteners (Trex Hideaway or equivalent) on the field, color-matched screws on perimeter and stair treads
  • End-gap spacing calculated for the install temperature, since Trex expands and contracts more than wood
  • Final walkthrough with the homeowner, fastener tightness check, and registration of the manufacturer warranty

Why Austin Homeowners Trust Us with Trex

We’ve completed over 200 deck projects across the Austin metro, and a substantial percentage of those have been composite. Every job is fully insured, including general liability and workers’ compensation. We don’t claim to be licensed because Texas doesn’t license deck builders, but we do back our work with a 1-year workmanship warranty in writing on top of the Trex manufacturer fade and stain coverage.

Permits are handled through trusted third-party partners, so you don’t have to navigate City of Austin development services on your own. We pass through actual permit fees with no markup. If you’d like to see our work before committing, our contact page has direct booking, or call 512-566-7519 to schedule a consultation.

Trex Decks Across the Austin Metro

Composite decking has specific behaviors in Texas heat that homeowners and even some installers underestimate. Trex boards expand more than wood when surface temperatures hit 130 degrees in direct August sun, which is common on south-facing Austin decks. Proper end-gap calculation at install temperature prevents buckling. We install at the calculated gap for the day’s conditions, not a one-size value.

We build Trex decks across the full metro, from tight urban lots in Hyde Park and Mueller to larger backyards in Steiner Ranch and the West Lake Hills corridor. Suburban builds in Travis Heights often pair Trex surface boards with aluminum or composite railing for a fully low-maintenance system.

Soil matters too. Austin’s clay shifts dramatically between wet and dry seasons, so footings have to go deeper than what’s standard in other markets. We drill to refusal or 36 inches, whichever comes first, and we use bell-bottom footings on grade transitions where the deck cantilevers off the house.

Trex Deck Installation FAQs

Most Trex decks take five to eight weeks from signed contract to final walk-through. The timeline includes design finalization, permit coordination, Trex material lead time (usually two to three weeks for the popular colors), framing, surface install, and railing. Larger custom builds with multi-level designs can run nine to twelve weeks. Our typical installation timeline breaks down each phase.

A properly installed Trex deck will perform for 25 to 30 years with minimal maintenance. The fade and stain warranty is 25 years on residential applications, and the structural warranty matches. Real-world performance often exceeds those numbers if the substructure was built correctly with treated lumber and proper flashing. The composite surface itself is essentially maintenance-free beyond occasional washing.

Trex costs more upfront but you skip the resealing cycle entirely. Over a 20-year ownership window, total cost of ownership is roughly comparable, sometimes lower for Trex once you factor in stain, brushes, and weekends. Cedar makes sense if you want a natural look and you enjoy the maintenance ritual. Trex makes sense if you want install-and-forget. Both are valid choices for Austin conditions.

Trex surface temperature does climb in direct sun, more than wood and less than concrete. Lighter color boards (Trex’s gray and tan families) run noticeably cooler than dark colors. We typically recommend lighter palettes for full-sun decks, especially around pools where bare feet are the norm. Shaded decks can use any color without comfort issues.

Yes, hidden fasteners are standard on every Trex install we do. We use Trex Hideaway or compatible systems that fit the grooved board edges. Color-matched screws are used on perimeter boards, stair treads, and any locations where hidden fasteners aren’t structurally appropriate. The result is a clean surface with no visible fastener heads on the field of the deck.

Most Austin Trex deck builds require a permit, especially anything attached to the house or above 30 inches off grade. Our trusted third-party permit partners handle the City of Austin submission, plan review, and inspection scheduling. We pass through actual permit fees with no markup and we keep you informed at each inspection milestone, from foundation through final.
