Pergola construction in Austin is about more than looks. A pergola gives a deck or patio a defined edge and partial shade from the afternoon sun, but it also adds posts, beams and load to your yard or your deck. We plan both sides together. Schedule a pergola estimate and we’ll look at where it’ll stand, what it’ll connect to and how you want to use the space underneath.

We’re a veteran-owned company that’s been building outdoor structures across Central Texas since 2008, with more than 200 completed deck projects. We’re fully insured, and every pergola we build carries our 1-year workmanship warranty.

Freestanding Pergolas

A freestanding pergola carries itself on its own posts and footings, so it can sit over a patio, a ground-level deck or an open corner of the yard. Placement is where most of the planning goes. When large trees are nearby, our crew doesn’t treat the first footing layout as final. Root locations, tree protection and existing landscaping can shift where posts belong.

Attached Pergolas

An attached pergola connects to the house or to an existing deck. Before we attach anything, our crew checks whether the existing supports and framing are suitable for the added work. A deck that’s fine under foot traffic may need reinforcement before it carries pergola posts. If we have questions about the framing, we’ll start with a deck framing inspection and show you what we find.

Wood or Aluminum

Wood pergolas bring a warm, natural look and pair well with cedar deck construction. They need periodic care in Texas sun, and pergola staining keeps the wood protected. Aluminum pergolas need far less upkeep and won’t need sealing. Either material can take an optional shade cover when you want more coverage than open rafters give.

Size matters as much as material. We set the height so the pergola clears doors, windows and rooflines, and we space the rafters for the amount of shade you want at the time of day you’re usually outside.

How We Plan a Pergola

  • Walk the site. We look at how the house, the existing patio or deck, the yard’s elevation and the paths people use all relate. A pergola needs to work with the property as it is, not just look good in a drawing.
  • Design it. We prepare plans and custom outdoor design previews in 3D, so you can see height, spacing and shade before anything’s ordered.
  • Clear approvals first. In planned communities, we ask you to check the architectural approval requirements before materials are ordered, since drawings, dimensions, finishes and placement may need sign-off. Where historic review may apply, we check that too.
  • Coordinate permits. If the project needs a City of Austin permit, it’s filed through the city’s Austin Build + Connect portal, and our trusted permit partners handle the filing.
  • Build and finish. We set footings or reinforce the attachment point, frame the pergola and finish it with stain, sealant or the aluminum finish you chose.

Pergolas With New Decks, Pool Decks and Remodels

Building a pergola alongside one of our new deck builds lets us plan post locations and framing for both structures at once. A pergola over a seating area near the water is a natural fit for pool deck projects as well.

Already have a deck you like? A pergola is a natural addition during deck remodeling projects. We check the existing deck first, then design the pergola to suit it.

Why Homeowners Choose Ace Deck Builders

We plan the structure before the style, explain what we find and give you a clear scope before any work begins. Permits are coordinated through trusted partners, and we back the finished work with a 1-year workmanship warranty. You can see how that approach lands in our homeowner reviews on Google.

Pergolas Across Austin and Central Texas

Our Austin deck company builds pergolas from Central neighborhoods, where mature trees and tight side yards shape post placement, to newer planned communities, where architectural approval comes before ordering.

On sloped lots, an attached pergola often sits on a deck that’s much higher at its outer edge than at the house, so we check the posts, beams and footings below before adding load. That’s routine on hillside work around Lakeway deck projects and out to Cedar Park deck projects.

Pergola FAQs

It starts with a site visit. We look at where the pergola will stand, what it will attach to and how you’ll use the space, then design it in 3D. If architectural approval or a City of Austin permit applies, we sort that out before materials are ordered. Then we set footings or reinforce the attachment point, build the frame and finish it.

It depends on the look you want and how much upkeep you’re willing to do. Wood, especially cedar, gives a warm natural finish but needs regular staining or sealing in Texas sun. Aluminum needs far less care and won’t need sealing. Both can carry an optional shade cover, and we’ll show you each option in the design before you choose.

Often, yes. Before we do, our crew checks whether the existing supports and framing are suitable for the added load. Some decks can carry pergola posts as they are, while others need reinforcement first. If the framing raises questions, we’ll inspect it, show you photos and explain what the attachment needs before any work is scheduled.

It depends on the project and where you live. The City of Austin sets which work needs a permit, and our trusted permit partners handle the filing when one’s required. In planned communities, architectural approval may cover drawings, dimensions, finishes and placement, so we ask you to check those requirements before any materials are ordered.

A pergola with open rafters gives partial shade that moves through the day, which many homeowners like for a deck or patio. If you want more coverage, we can add an optional shade cover. During design, we’ll talk through how you use the space and the time of day you’re outside most, so the layout and spacing match.

Wood pergolas need the same care as a wood deck. In Texas sun, that means periodic cleaning and a fresh coat of stain or sealant to protect against UV damage and moisture. We offer staining for decks, pergolas and railings, so we can treat the pergola and the deck below it together and keep both surfaces matching.

Yes, and it’s often the simplest way to do it. Planning both together lets us place footings and posts for each structure at once and design the deck framing with the pergola in mind. You’ll see the deck and pergola together in a 3D design before anything is ordered, so the proportions and shade work as one space.
