Austin Deck Remodeling Built on What's Already Sound

Ace Deck Builders remodels existing decks across Austin by expanding layouts, converting wood to composite, adding stairs and upgrading railings. We inspect the current framing first, so new work goes onto a structure that can carry it and the parts worth keeping stay in place.

Deck remodeling in Austin usually starts when a deck is still standing but no longer fits the house or the way you use the yard. A home remodel may have moved the back door, an addition may have changed the layout, or the deck may simply be too small. Door heights, new additions, existing patios and changes to the yard can all make an old layout a poor fit. Book a remodel consultation and we’ll start by measuring what’s there now.

We’re veteran-owned, fully insured and have been building decks across Central Texas since 2008, with more than 200 completed projects. Every remodel is backed by our 1-year workmanship warranty.

  • Expanding the deck. Adding square footage, extending toward the yard or adding a lower level.
  • Converting wood to composite. New Trex, TimberTech or Fiberon boards on framing that’s been checked and prepared for them. See our composite decking options.
  • Adding stairs and landings. New access to the yard, a pool or a patio, built with code-compliant stairs.
  • Upgrading railings. Replacing tired railings with new wood, composite or aluminum systems through our deck railing installation service.
  • Reconfiguring the layout. Moving stairs, changing the shape or adding features such as a shade pergola.

Deck Remodel, Repair or Replacement?

These three jobs start in the same place, with an inspection, but they end differently. A remodel keeps a sound structure and changes what’s on it or around it. If parts of the deck are failing, the job starts as targeted structural repair before any upgrades go on. If the ledger, joists or footings have deteriorated too far, a full tear-out rebuild is the better investment.

We’ll tell you which one your deck needs and show you the photos behind that call. Spending money to upgrade boards on a frame that won’t last isn’t something we’ll recommend.

How We Plan a Deck Remodel

Our crew starts by looking for earlier modifications, the condition of the ledger and framing, drainage and whether the existing supports are suitable for the work you have in mind. A deck that’s held up fine as it is may need added support before it can carry a larger footprint or a pergola. Here’s what goes into our written deck inspections.

Next, we measure the current conditions, not the original plans. Door thresholds, additions, patios and yard grades often change over the years, and the remodel has to meet the house as it stands today. We settle the scope before anything comes apart, because swapping boards is a different job from changing the footprint or rebuilding framing.

Then we design the remodel in 3D through our deck design service, so you can see the new layout against your house before materials are ordered. If the work needs a City of Austin permit, it’s filed through the Austin Build + Connect portal, and our trusted permit partners handle the filing.

Converting a Wood Deck to Composite

Composite boards look and wear differently from wood, and the manufacturers set their own framing requirements. Even on a newer deck, our crew checks joist spacing, connections, flashing, fasteners and drainage before new boards go down. When the existing framing meets those requirements, the conversion can keep your current structure. When it doesn’t, we add or adjust framing first so the new decking performs the way it’s supposed to.

Why Homeowners Choose Ace Deck Builders

We’d rather build on what’s sound than sell you a new deck you don’t need. Every remodel starts with a written inspection, comes with a clear scope and carries our 1-year workmanship warranty. Read Google reviews from our customers to see how we work.

Deck Remodeling Across Austin and Central Texas

Decks on older Central Austin homes have often been modified more than once, so our Austin deck builders team pays close attention to how earlier changes were made before adding anything new. On sloped lots, a remodel might mean adding a lower landing or a new level, and our multi-level deck work covers those layouts.

Hillside decks in the Lakeway area often sit much higher at the outer edge than at the house, which changes support heights, bracing and stairs for any expansion. See our Lakeway deck building page for that area.

Deck Remodeling FAQs

It starts with an inspection of the existing deck: the ledger, framing, supports, drainage and any earlier changes. Then we measure current conditions, design the remodel in 3D and settle the scope. If a City of Austin permit applies, our trusted permit partners handle the filing. We build the new work on the sound parts of your deck and back it with a 1-year workmanship warranty.

When the structure is sound, usually yes. A remodel keeps framing that’s still doing its job and spends your budget on the changes you want. If the ledger, joists or footings have deteriorated, though, upgrading the surface would only hide the problem, and replacement makes more sense. Our inspection tells you which situation you’re in, with photos.

Yes. We install Trex, TimberTech and Fiberon composite boards over existing framing when it meets the manufacturer’s requirements. Our crew checks joist spacing, connections, flashing, fasteners and drainage first. If the framing needs work, we add or adjust it before the new boards go down so the decking performs the way it’s designed to.

Often, yes. We check whether the existing supports are suitable for a larger footprint, then design the expansion so it ties into the current deck properly. Sometimes that means extending the same level, and sometimes it means adding a lower landing or a new level on a sloped yard. You’ll see the new layout in a 3D design before anything is ordered.

It depends on the scope. Swapping boards is a different job from changing the footprint or rebuilding framing, and the City of Austin sets which work needs a permit. When one is required, our trusted permit partners handle the filing, and we schedule the work so the structure can be inspected before it’s covered.

Yes. Before we attach a pergola to an existing deck, our crew checks whether the framing and supports can carry the added load, and we reinforce them if needed. Planning the pergola as part of the remodel means its posts and the deck changes are designed together, rather than added one after the other.

Yes. Adding stairs to the yard, a pool or a patio is a common remodel, and so is replacing worn railings with new wood, composite or aluminum systems. We build stairs and guards to code and check that the existing framing can support the new connections before we attach them, so the upgrade is as solid as it looks.
